Introduction

I have spent the last four years driving Salesforce and data engineering solutions in the insurance industry, and the industry is at a pivotal moment. At a conference last year, someone joked on stage that people are still surprised insurance is actually looking at digital transformation. The joke holds up. For most carriers, what we call digital transformation has produced digital complexity, not digital capability. 73% of insurers run five or more disconnected core systems. $160 billion goes to legacy maintenance globally every year. 42% of policyholders say they would switch carriers for a better digital experience. The investment has been real. The transformation has not.

 

 

Most Insurers Are Digitizing Silos, Not Transforming

The instinct has been to buy point solutions for functional problems. A new policy admin system. A new claims platform. A standalone quoting tool. A CRM. Each solves a domain problem. None of this works unless the data engineering underneath is built deliberately, in parallel, as a program in its own right.

Salesforce is a phenomenal platform for surfacing data and acting on it. Salesforce is not a data engineering tool. Carriers who treat it as both the destination and the source of truth for raw operational data are building castles in the air.
